The Dandy Warhols new album will be released May 5, 2008. Somehow this band has managed to remain basically ignored by the public (except for the occasional single such as Bohemian like you, Not if you were the last junkie on earth, Everyday should be a holiday, Used to be friends, etc.). So a quick reminder of why they are so remarkably great seems reasonable:
It’s been said they sound like what the Jesus and Mary Chain should have – sort of a mix between the beach boys and grunge. I’m fully aware that these bands might not seem incredibly relevant to the current music scene. But there’s always room for somewhat melodic music that isn’t over-produced pop-trash. I vaguely remember that the band once claimed they only put out albums when they ran out of cash to buy illicit substances. It may not be true, but it seems prudent to listen to them while they’re still coherent. They’ve released 2 preview clips which aren’t particularly promising in themselves. But this band likes to mix noise together and then surprise the fans with actual songs. So I’m hopeful that the album will be brilliant.
Update: It turns out that the new album was unveiled at a listening party on May 5, 2008. And is available for listening in 10000 jukeboxes (presumably across the United States), but that it only really becomes commercially available on May 19, 2008. For now we have the track listing: The World the People Together (Come On) – which can be heard on MySpace Mission Control Welcome to the World Wasp in the Lotus And Then I Dreamt of Yes Talk Radio Love Song Now You Love Me Mis Amigos The Legend of the Last of the Outlaw Truckers AKA The Ballad of Sheriff Shorty Beast of All Saints Valerie Yum Musee D’Nougat and some low quality (live) previews of some of the songs:
Update 2: Still can’t find the album in the local CD hut… but the Dandy Warhols are streaming the whole album on You might need to update the Adobe Flash player to get it to work, but it’s well worth the effort.
