Yesterday, GM showed off their electric car, the Chevrolet Volt to the grand public. Surprisingly, it is a good-looking car powered be lithium-ion batteries. After showing it off, GM announced that they will have the car in showrooms by the end of 2010. Now this kind of news is usually wonderful news. General Motors is helping us get rid of our oil addiction and at the same time cleaning up the environment with the new Chevy Volt. But then, I spoke to Big D…
According to Big D, General Motor’s latest announcement means that we should be selling our GM stocks and selling them fast because the company will be broke in 6 months. And I couldn’t agree with him more. Why you ask? Well it’s because of the first rule of poker: If you have a great hand, you don’t announce it to the public!! You keep it secret and announce it when the time is right! By making their big announcement of a product that is still not ready, GM has placed all their cards on the Chevy Volt. The idiots at GM even gave a release date of late 2010. This means that Toyota and Honda will have an electric car out before GM! Announcing the date that they will deliver the Chevy Volt was the stupidest thing that GM could have done. Now, Toyota and Honda know what date they have to beat. And lets face it, Toyota and Honda have been beating GM at everything!! Either Toyota or Honda will have an electric car out in 6 months while GM will still be showing us concept sketches of the Volt.
The Volt is General Motor’s last attempt at glory before they die and get cast off in the grave of bankrupt companies. And by giving Toyota and Honda an idea and a date to beat, the Volt will die before it ever sees mass production. Good job GM! You now have 6 months to live!
Since the Volt will go down in history as the car that never was… Enjoy the pics below. They’ll be hard to find in 6 months

Hm. While part of my prediction was based on the fact that Toyota and Honda will release their cars before GM, my real concern was that GM has made all of their current products unattractive. At this point, why would anyone buy a GM before the 2010 release of the electric car? I figure GM’s short term sales will drop to almost nothing. Most companies can’t survive 2 years without selling anything. And if they actually can pay their employees until the release of the electric car, then they have to hope that Toyota and Honda don’t release something comparable before this time.
A real car has an engine under the hood. Bias aside, like the others have said, this car is just impractical.
mike schmidt – there’s no way hydrogen is going to take for a very long time if ever. Can you imagine the insurance premiums when we have little hindenburgs going off all around the cities every rush hour? If you haven’t noticed electricity, computers, and battery technology is the distant future of personal vehicles not gases and fossil fuel.
To the author of this article, give me some sources instead of using trite dribble about GM’s 6 month bankruptcy date. Or is it because of your distaste of the economic standpoint of your community or self during this time. Or maybe you just had a buggy lumina or cavalier a little while back.
All else aside this was a complete flop for GM. People are seeing 25-35 miles full electric. Then charge 8 hours unless you want a higher voltage box installed for hundreds of dollars in your garage and wait 6 hours instead. Then get 31 mpg in gas-assisted mode. It’s just awful. How can they advertise a car that gets ’300mpg’ a year ago where people are now seeing as low as 32mpg… It’s so wrong on so many levels. I guess the guy who lives 5 minutes away from work could benefit, or he could just ride a bicycle.

Why would anyone pay $40K for a 4-passenger car that has to be recharged every 40 miles before switching over to premium gas? Nice job, Government Motors. GM had a hydrogen car ready to go by now. But gov’t takes over GM and that’s out the window. What we could’ve had: Zero emissions, 160 mile range $2/gal w cost of $25K. Shell was ready to have hydrogen available at all of their gas stations. What we will get instead: another gov’t fail.
