I’m not really a big fan of pop music, but I have to admit that watching the PussyCat Dolls’ “Search for the Next Doll” was one of my guilty pleasures. I suspect that even the members of Godsmack and Disturbed enjoyed watching this show… The girls were relatively talented singers and/or dancers, and had enough personality for the conflicts to be entertaining without being trashy. I wasn’t actually rooting for Asia, but she definitely deserved to be in the top 3.

Based on the commercial success of this contest, it wasn’t really a surprise when the producers created a new contest called “Girlicious”. But while “The Search” tried to maintain some dignity – since it was tied to an existing/successful group, “Girlicious” didn’t hold anything back. Some of the girls were still talented, but the show seemed to emphasize the (almost continuous) loathing between contestants. The soft-core factor also seemed elavated. This made the final (tearful) episode somewhat surprising.

But the first two singles (Like Me, Stupid Shit) re-emphasized the producers’ vision for the band (narcissistic/attitude based almost-p0rn).

Not that I’m complaining. It’s just not particularly subtle. The motto for the PussCat Dolls was (something like) “Classy, not trashy”. So I’m a little surprised to see that the new PCD video (When I Grow Up) looks/sounds an awful lot like a Girlicious video.

And, of course, there’s the conspicuous absence of the winner of “The Search” contest. Where the heck is Asia anyway? The rumors suggest that she left the band to pursue a solo career. Really? This seems a little doubtful. She wasn’t a bad singer, but could probably have used a little more exposure to build something resembling a fan base. Other rumors suggest that she was advised to leave the group since she didn’t really get along with the original members. Whatever happened, it makes the contest seem a little less relevant. Also, makes us wonder what happened to the other contestants. So far, I’ve found Chelsea Korka on MySpace

and a video by Melissa S(mith)

Who cares! Both shows are a great reason for us to see trashy girls fight each other and show lots of sking… without having to go to a strip club.
